The chalets, Hayle Towans
The “Cornish Riviera” Express
It was over forty five years ago when I was at school, Martin tells us, that the idea came to me. I went on a Geographic Expedition to the Scilly Isles. For our week away my geography
teacher worked out a programme of geographic and leisure visits with some work sessions and a hand book detailing our activities. I was a Sunday School and Weekday Bible Class leader for young people at the time and thought, we could arrange a week away for our young people which mixed Bible reading and study with walks and recreation in the countryside to enjoy God’s handiwork in nature.
Our first group in 1960, pictured above, went by the “Cornish Riviera Express” steam train to stay in chalets (pictured left) on the sand dunes there. These were at Hayle Towans overlooking the beach and sea on St. Ives Bay near the tip of Cornwall. To see the group’s names and read on please go to the next page.
